| | Destroy Everything You Touch - Ladytron | ] | I've come to the conclusion that for the most part TV in China sucks. There's one channel called Star World that keeps on touting its brand new show; wait for it: The OC. Yeah, brand new two and a half years ago. So to make things worse; when they promote next weeks episode, they condense the entre 00:43:20 plot arc into 00:00:45 so the viewer doesn't even need to watch the episode. Also, 2 weeks ago the sound went out of sync on a few channels. Coincidently, the ones that I watch: CNN (home to The Daily Show: Global Edition, HBO, and the aforementioned Star World.
Between Star World's lousy job building hype and Jon Stewart providing his own dubbing a la kung fu cinema, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I bought even more DVDs including seasons 1 + 2 of Laguna Beach, and season 1 of Battlestar Galactica (you know, the good one with the hot cylons); and I downloaded the first 11 episodes of Veronica Mars. I am in love with Veronica Mars. I've already watched 6 episodes in 3 days. It is what the kids are calling "teh shit".
Today I thought it would be fun to go to the Carrefour(it's like Wal-Mart, but good) and look around just for the hell of it. So, as I'm leaving I decide to take a peek at the foreign language bookstore, just cause. As I was perusing the 'general interest' section [SEE: Men's Magazines], I glanced over to see a familiar pair of blue eyes. (prepare for knee slapping) It was Miss Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell on the cover of Maxim. "Well I'll be, they let this magazine into this country?"

On my way home, I figured I might as well read the Maxim whilst walking on the sidewalk (Not as hazardous as you think, people here write text messages going 35 on motor scooters while cars are crossing the dedicated "less that 4 wheel" lane to make turns).
As I'm walking along pondering the letters section, A guy on a bike pulls up and asks me for directions. I don't know what's weirder: the fact that he asked me (an obvious non-local)for directions, or the fact that I was able to give them to him... in Mandarin.

| | Everyday (Rudebwoy) - Kardinall Offishall | ] | One of my friends from the 'plex asked me how to say: "you're a slutty ho" in Mandarin.
I don't know how to say that but I did meet a slutty mandarin ho whilst drinking Tiger Beer at the replica American Sports Bar in the local airport Marriott earlier this evening. I practiced Zhongguóhuà with her. The whole thing cost me ¥46! It was quite surreal funny.
Yesterday, I went out to buy an alarm clock so I'll be able to wake up for school. Every hour on the hour, the chinese lady in the clock reads me the time aloud. What can I say? It's China, labor is cheap! The place I bought it at is called a hypermarket, It's like a super Wal-Mart but with a friendlier aura, cheaper plasma TVs and more like a grocery store than a Costco. After I went to McDonalds, just for the hell of it. I have come to the conclusion that global uniformity means that it's equally awesome/nasty everywhere. To get home I had to take the bus. Ok easy enough; but I got on one going the wrong way so I had to get off and get on a double decker. Again, easy enough; but these double deckers have low ceilings and being a 6'0" wàiguórén I had to duck a bit to stand up. (Gulliver's Travels? Maybe.) |

| Where the streets have no names... that I can properly pronounce |

As a young boy in Canada I was always taught to look both ways before crossing the street. In Shanghai, both ways doesn't cut it. Cars come from everywhere regardless of what color the light is. Also, the sidewalk isn't the place you walk to not get hit by vehicles it's just the only place you walk to not hit by 4 wheeled vehicles. Anything smaller than a car is allowed on sidewalks here. I guess Kirstie Alley won't be visiting here anytime soon. |

I am extremely frazzled right now and I can't get on MySpace to calm my nerves. This trip is making me extremely anxious. |
